In 1938 Aulie-Ata was renamed after great poet Zhambyl Zhabayev

The city of Zhambyl is ancient city, which in different years was named Talas, Taraz, Aulie-Ata and Mirzoyan. By the request of regional community and Decree of the President of Kazakhstan in 1997 the name Taraz was returned to city of Zhambyl.
