21 years ago the Constitutional Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan was established. It is a collective body for constitutional oversight in Kazakhstan. It consists of seven members, including the chairman, two member appointed by the President, two member appointed by the Senate and two members appointed by the Majilis of the Parliament for a six-year term. Under article 72 of the Constitution, the Constitutional Council ckecks that Presidential and Parliamentary elections and a republican referendum have been properly conducted. In addition, the body verifies compliance of adopted laws, decrees and international treaties with the Constitution. It also issues official interpretations of the provisions of the Constitution.
