25 February 1999
the census of population of the Republic of Kazakhstan was held in the month of
February, exactly 10 years after the All-union census of the Soviet Union in
1989. The first post-independence population census of the Republic of
Kazakhstan was held in the period from February 25, to March 4, 1999. The main
results of the first national census were published by the end of 2000. On the
basis of the population census of 1999, the population of the Republic of
Kazakhstan was equal to 14953,1 thousand people, a decrease for 1246,1 thousand people (7.7%), compared with the data of the Kazakh Audit (16199,2 thousand people) and data of the
All-Union census of 1989.
The census recorded a drop in the number of people of Kazakhstan, which replaced the long period of growth in the Soviet period in 1950-1990. This was explained by the decrease emigration of European ethnic groups. The most numerous nationalities remained, as before, Kazakhs (8.0 million people), and Russian (4.4 million people). While in 1986, the number of Russian and Kazakh people in the Republic was equal. Kazakhs share in the country's population was 53.4 % (39.7% in 1989), Russian - 30.0% (37.8%), Uzbeks - 2.5% (2.0%). The number of Germans, on the other hand, was reduced. Despite this, they retain the natural growth in Kazakhstan.
Uneven changes in the number of different ethnic groups has generated sharp ethnic and cultural shifts, especially in urban areas. Thus in Astana (Tzelinograd) the Kazakhs share increased from 17.7% to 41.3%; in Shevchenko (Aktau) from 23.5% to 55.6%; in Novy Uzen from 50.6% to 95.3 %. The number of Kazakhs in cities increased by 45% and in the rural area by 9%.
At the time of the census, the number of menfolk was accounted for 48% of the total population, the female population - for 52%. For 1000 men there were 1076 women. The predominance of female population is being observed for 25 years.
