October 4, 1957 the first Soviet satellite was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome. With a diameter of 580 mm the weight of the first satellite was 83.6 kg. It existed 92 days. According to the decision of the International Astronautical Federation, October 4, 1957 was officially declared the day of the space era beginning.
