On September 1, 1921 the Central Regional Archive, first in the history of Kazakhstan State Archive, was established on the basis of the Orenburg Provincial Archive. At the very beginning it had 5 employees: director, archivist of the 1st and 2nd category, secretary and watchman. Nevertheless, by the end of 1921 archives of 19 institutions were sent to the Central Regional Archive.
