It’s been a long time since the inhumane and bloody war of 1941-1945 that had brought nothing but pain, famine, death and destruction... The last shots of artillery have long ceased on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. Today we live in a peaceful country and believe in bright future for the whole nation. We have never experienced that horror and devastation that had emerged during that period in the hearts of our parents and grandparents. We have never heard sirens sounded to warn of a danger before it occurred... Let us never face the same threat!
But at what price we have obtained this peaceful life? "Nothing and no one has been forgotten" — this slogan has echoed through the hearts of those people whose relatives and friends died during the Great Patriotic War giving their lives for people’s happiness and prosperity.
History holds sacred and remembers the deed of Soviet soldiers, their mothers, wives and sisters. However, unfortunately, it can cruelly forget some names and fates of those who had made precious contributions to our common victory over fascism at the cost of their own lives and health. There were thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of heroes...
In Kazakhstan each modern family has its own old photo album which carefully keeps the memory of our loved ones and their deeds during the years of the Great Patriotic War. The yellowed photos can tell us about life of soldiers, hardships of those who remained on the home front. They can recall the facts which we must not forget.
While paying tribute to those who have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty so that others may live in peace, www. e-history. kz launches the project "The story of one photo" dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Each person, regardless of the region and age has an opportunity to participate in it.
To take part in the project "The story of one photo", just describe a photo from your family photo album related to the period of the Great Patriotic War and send the story with attached photo by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line "The story of one photo" project.
Your story should contain the following information:
- Who is depicted in the photo?
- When and where it was taken?
- Where did he or she fight and what stories told after coming back?
- If your hero is a worker on the home front — where did he or she worked? Which troubles faced during the Great Patriotic War (famine, hard labour, lack of equipment, and so on)?
- Referring to a child, tell about his life and experience in his/her family or orphanage.
