On the night from January 6 to 7, the people of Kazakhstan, along with the entire Orthodox world, are celebrating Christmas. This day has long been a holiday in our country, regardless of nationality and religion. The noise of bells is announcing the arrival of Christmas. Just like the New Year, Christmas is rich for traditions, customs and symbols. The indispensable attributes of Christmas are the Christmas wreath, a symbol of the light that comes into the world with the birth of Christ, the bells, which are necessary for the expulsion of the evil spirit, the Christmas candles, with the help of which the forces of darkness and cold could be expelled, as well as the colorful Christmas cards. On this day people give up some useful things. Girls traditionally arrange divination. It is also advisable to visit the family, friends and relatives. This is their holiday. Unfortunately, one of the main Christmas traditions, the merry Christmas carols is becoming obsolete. Today it is possible to meet the people who make carol singing only in the rural areas of Kazakhstan. In connection with the introduction of amendments to the Law “On labour”, the Orthodox Christmas in Kazakhstan is declared a public holiday.

On January 7, 2006 the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan
Nazarbayev signed the Constitutional Law “On Amendments and Additions to the
Decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, having the force of the
Constitutional Law “On state symbols of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. The new
National Anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan was approved by the new Law, the
anthem is based on the song “Menin Kazakhstanym” in the words of Zhumeken
Nazhimedenov and Nursultan Nazarbayev, the musical version was made by Shamshi
The lyrics of the song created by Shamshi Kaldayakov and Zhumeken Nazhimedenov “Menin Kazakhstanym” that was defined by the Law as the anthem of the Republic of Kazakhstan were changed in order to put the song into the line with the National Anthem. It is important for people to stand and exert the right hand to the left side of the chest when the anthem is being performed.
