Kustanay County is an administrative unit of the Turgay region, Chelyabinsk province, Orenburg-Turgay province, Kustanay province and also as a part of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. Administrative center is the city of Kustanay. Until 1895 the city was named as Nicholas County.

As a part of the Turgay region, Nicholas County was formed in 1868. In 1895 the county was renamed as Kustanay. Further, in 1919 the County was transferred to the Chelyabinsk province, in 1920 – to the Orenburg-Turgay province and finally was eliminated in 1921. In 1922 it was restored as a part of the Kustanay province. Moreover, in 1925 all the territories of the province were connected to the County, as the province itself was abolished and Kustanay County was transferred under the direct supervision of Kazakh ASSR. The County was transformed into Kustanay district the same year.
